Audience Growth Manager

Salary:  £350 to £450 per day depending on experience

Hours:  1 to 1.5 days a week tbc

Start date:  February-March 2025

This is a freelance role for Storythings that will run until late December 2025 and potentially beyond. We offer flexibility around hybrid or remote working.

We will accept applications from outside of the UK if you’re happy to work remotely, as long as you are within a UK-compatible time zone (up to two hours ahead or behind GMT).

Description of role 

Storythings is looking for an Audience Growth Manager to work on an exciting new digital editorial project for a major programme within a UK foundation that is working towards a more just and equitable society.

This role will work  alongside a Managing Editor and the wider Storythings team to develop and deliver an audience engagement strategy that supports the editorial vision for the project, building on the Foundation’s relationship with its core audiences and communities.

You will be expected to make recommendations and oversee qualitative and quantitative testing of editorial prototypes with targeted communities, monitoring and providing regular updates on community growth metrics and data identity and identifying strategic partnerships.

You will have experience in working with foundations or non-profits, or at least a demonstrable understanding of how they work, and how to measure impact.  You will have experience of engaging and growing a community around an editorial product.

Responsible for

  • Developing an understanding of the landscape and communities that the editorial project will serve
  • Developing and delivering an audience engagement strategy for the editorial in line with the editorial vision
  • Working with the Managing Editor to create compelling editorial formats and content to support growth of the communities and audiences
  • Implementing and overseeing qualitative and quantitative testing of prototypes and iterations, providing insights and suggestions as to how to improve engagement with the core audiences and communities
  • Identifying, monitoring and updating the project team on community growth metrics and impact metrics on a regular, agreed cadence
  • Working with the wider project team to produce assets or content as required
  • Identifying and executing on a partnerships strategy to grow the community, and planning and running occasional online and/or offline events

Experience and knowledge

  • Proven experience of engaging and growing a community around an editorial product
  • Development of compelling content ideas to encourage participation from communities
  • Experience of working with funders or clients to create and align an editorial vision with their goals
  • Experience of distribution, syndication and partnership strategies to align with the editorial vision
  • Developing content that convenes audiences to increase engagement and participation
  • Qualitative and quantitative measurement, reporting and analysis; experience of analytics platforms such as Google Analytics
  • A demonstrable strong interest in the development and social action sectors
  • Experience of trialling and supporting the editorial team in developing and iterating editorial products
  • Working with creative project management and communications tools such as Miro, Trello and Slack

Desirable

  • Experience of working with audio and/or video
  • Experience working with an online publication, nonprofit community, or brand community
  • Design skills using tools such as Canva to create social assets
