This is a freelance role for Storythings that will run until late December 2026 and potentially beyond. We offer flexibility around hybrid or remote working.
We will accept applications from outside of the UK if you’re happy to work remotely, as long as you are within a UK-compatible time zone (up to two hours ahead or behind GMT), so that you can join any team calls as needed.

Description of role
Storythings is looking for a Social Media Manager to work on an exciting new digital editorial project for a major programme within The Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Launching in the Spring, the project will be an online platform for stories that aim to inspire the people and movements who are building transformative futures. The content will include personal essays, podcast series, radical imagination work, reading lists, ways to take action and more.
The project will launch as an online editorial site and alongside this, we are looking to launch an Instagram page and LinkedIn posts to amplify and promote the content. Crucially, this role will focus on boosting visibility around the project and growing an audience.
It is important to note that this means that the community will be growing from nil so we are looking for a Social Media Manager who is excited to be able to join the project in its inception, to help shape its growth and build its voice and brand identity. The role will be best suited to folks who are interested in having autonomy and independence over the running of a social media account and are excited by the prospect of putting forward new and creative ideas. An interest in social justice and awareness of the alternative futures ecosystem will be key for this role.
What you’ll do:
- Day-to-day management of the project’s Instagram and LinkedIn channels with the aim of growing and maintaining a supportive and engaging environment for our community
- Drive engagement across the project’s IG and website through effective community management, responding to comments, messages and mentions within our guidelines and tone of voice
- Work with our Impact and Engagement Strategist on engagement strategies for the project IG, aiding growth and community participation
- Create accurate, inspiring and engaging content that is optimised for the channel and that meets brand and accessibility guidelines. This is to include a range of static assets and reels/videos for IG stories
- Create a scheduling calendar for social media posts and
- Copywriting of post captions
- Manage and set up a Linktree profile for the project
- Develop the project’s brand voice and identity on IG/LinkedIn in consultation with the Managing Editor
What you’ll bring:
- Experience working in the social justice sector with knowledge of/interest in the alternative futures ecosystem
- Strong proficiency with Canva and in designing a range of static and animated assets
- Experience of creating reels and proficiency with editing software such as CapCut
- Good understanding of social media analytics and audience insights
- Up-to-date knowledge of social platform trends, best practices, and emerging formats
- Creativity, curiosity and ideas
