Salary: £45,000 per annum

Hours: Full time / 5 days a week

This is a new role for Storythings that will initially be a 12-month contract, with the possibility to move to a permanent role in the future. We are looking for someone to join us straight away. We offer flexibility around hybrid or remote working.

Description of role 

Storythings is looking for a Managing Editor to work on an exciting new project for a major programme within a UK foundation that is working towards a more just and equitable society.

Your role is to develop a creative vision and voice for a new digital editorial project that will publish various media formats and will foster engagement with an expanding community base. You will manage a team to deliver on this vision and iterate over time to produce the highest quality content to support the project’s overall objectives.

Your work will also include contributing to other Storythings projects, such as writing and editing work for other clients or our own projects and pitches.

You will have experience in working with or writing for foundations or non-profits, or at least a demonstrable understanding of how they work; and experience of writing and editing narrative and long-form editorial and shorter audio-visual formats – particularly writing about people and ideas, coordinating media content, and producing content for social and other platforms. You will also need to have experience with CMS systems to write, edit and publish articles and have an understanding of how to build relationships with the core audiences and communities.

Responsible for

  • Working closely with the Foundation to understand their editorial landscape and audience value proposition
  • Developing an editorial vision and voice and creating an editorial style guide
  • Curating and building an editorial rhythm
  • Creating and writing editorial formats and commissioning and editing content
  • Managing a small creative team and helping the set-up of a digital home for the overall editorial project
  • Working with a wider team to produce assets or content as required
  • Engaging with the Foundation’s community and actively contributing ideas to increase audience engagement
  • Representing Storythings at meetings and working with the client to create and align an editorial vision with their goals within the parameters of the project scope and budget

Experience and knowledge

  • Proven experience of developing a creative vision for an editorial project
  • Proven experience of building and running a team of in-house and/or freelance creatives
  • Experience of growing and engaging an online audience through content
  • Experience of working with and managing an editorial commissioning budget
  • Developing and managing an editorial workflow
  • A demonstrable strong interest in the development and social action sectors
  • Experience of distribution, syndication and partnership strategies
  • Experience of trialling, developing and iterating editorial products
  • Working with creative, project management and communications tools such as Miro, Trello and Slack

Desirable

  • Experience of working with audio and/or video
  • Experience of developing content formats
  • Experience of working with designers to create a visual editorial brand
